Sai Ganesh Veeravalli, SESAC team member from Karlstad University, recently participated in the 2026 Nordic Workshop on AI for Climate, organised by Climate AI Nordics at the University of Copenhagen.

The workshop brought together researchers, practitioners, and industry representatives from across the Nordic region working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, climate and environmental research. The programme covered a broad range of topics, including Earth Observation, computer vision, biodiversity monitoring, climate modelling, decision-support systems, sustainable AI, and the societal implications of AI for climate action.

SESAC’s participation provided an opportunity to introduce the centre’s mission to a wider Nordic AI and climate community. SESAC works to bridge Earth Observation and the social sciences by combining high-resolution satellite data, socio-economic data, and AI to support research, policy, and decision-making.

At the workshop, Sai shared SESAC’s vision of turning global pixels into social intelligence. This includes developing open and reusable workflows, lowering the barrier to satellite-based analysis for social scientists, supporting co-creative workshops and hackathons, and advancing GeoAI methods that connect Earth Observation data with pressing societal challenges.

The event was especially relevant to SESAC’s broader ambition: to build competence, foster collaboration, and develop practical applications where satellite data and AI can contribute to climate resilience, sustainability, and evidence-informed public policy.

We thank Climate AI Nordics and the organising team for creating an engaging platform for interdisciplinary exchange. SESAC looks forward to continued collaboration with researchers, practitioners, and institutions working to strengthen the role of AI and Earth Observation in addressing climate and societal challenges.
